Dog Car Seat Cover or Back Seat Dog Car Seat: Which Does Your Dog Need? (UK Guide)

The short answer: a dog car seat cover protects your car from your dog. A back seat dog car seat gives your dog a set place to sit, and small dogs a view out of the window.

Most owners of dogs under 12kg get more from a raised seat. Most owners of medium and large dogs get more from a cover. Some need both. This guide helps you work out which one is right for your dog and your car.

Four Questions That Decide It

  1. How much does your dog weigh? Raised seats in our range are rated from 8kg up to 26kg. If your dog is near or over 25kg, a cover, a back seat extender or a large car bed is the better fit. Our size calculator works this out in seconds.
  2. Is your main worry the dog or the car? If you mainly want to stop mud, hair and scratches, choose a cover. If your dog slides about, whines or tries to climb into the front, a seat gives them a calmer, set place.
  3. Who else sits in the back? A car seat takes one place and leaves the rest free. A hammock closes off the whole back. A flat bench cover sits in between, and people can still sit on it.
  4. Does your dog get car sick or anxious? Many small dogs settle better when raised up, because they can see out. A walled seat also feels more like a den.

Which One Suits Your Dog?

Small dog, under 12kg

Go for a raised seat

A dog booster car seat lifts toy and small breeds to window height and keeps them in one place. Add a cheap bench cover later if your dog sheds a lot.

Medium dog, 12 to 25kg

Either works, size is key

A walled medium seat suits Spaniels and Staffies who like to curl up. For a dog who loves a full stretch, a hammock gives more room.

Large dog, over 25kg

Go for a cover or extender

Most boosters are too small. A hard base cover or extender bridges the footwell so your dog can lie flat. See our large dog range.

Two dogs

Full cover, or two seats

Two small dogs can share a double dog car seat. Bigger pairs do better on a full hammock with a hard base.

When You Need Both

A seat and a cover work well together. The seat gives your dog a set spot, and the cover catches the hair and mud that spill over the edges. This suits owners who walk on muddy fields or beaches, families who carry people on the same seat later in the day, and anyone with a leather interior that marks easily.

If you want one product that does a bit of both, a hard base cover can be folded into a raised seat on one side while the other side stays free for a passenger. It costs more, but saves buying two items.

How to Check the Fit Before You Buy

For a seat, weigh your dog and measure their length while they lie on their side. For a cover, measure your back seat from door to door. Both tools below use these numbers and show matching products in stock.

Safety and the Law

Neither a seat nor a cover holds your dog on its own. Highway Code Rule 57 says dogs should be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or be hurt if you stop quickly. It lists a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard as ways to do this. Read more in our UK law guide.

Always clip to a harness. Use the short tether in the seat, or the seat belt opening in the cover, with a well fitted car harness. Never clip to a collar. Our seats and covers are not crash tested. If crash testing matters to you, our guide to crash tested seats explains the options and costs.

Quick Answers

Is a seat cover or a car seat better for a puppy?
For small breeds, a raised seat sized for the adult weight, padded with a blanket for now. For large breed puppies, a cover with a harness is better value, as they soon outgrow boosters.
Can a back seat dog car seat go on top of a seat cover?
Yes, if the cover is flat and has a non slip backing. Pull the seat straps tight through the cover so the seat does not slide.
Will a seat cover stop my dog falling into the footwell?
A hammock or hard base cover will. A flat bench cover will not.
Do I need a seat for a calm dog who lies down?
Often not. A cover plus a harness and tether is enough for many calm medium and large dogs.
