Back Seat Protector for Dogs: How to Choose the Right One for Your Car (UK Guide)
by Sami Andreson on Oct 30, 2026
A back seat protector for dogs is a waterproof cover that sits over your rear seats to stop hair, mud and claws damaging the upholstery. Choose a bench cover if people often share the back seat, a hammock if you want full coverage including the footwell, or a hard base cover if you have a large dog who likes to lie down. Measure your seat from door to door first, and look for a waterproof layer, a non slip backing and side flaps.
Most dog owners buy a seat protector after the first muddy walk, often in a hurry and often in the wrong size. A cover that is too narrow leaves the edges of the seat exposed, and one that is too wide bunches up and slides about. This guide explains the three main types, what to check before you buy, and how to fit one properly, so your car stays clean and your dog stays comfortable.
What Is a Back Seat Protector for Dogs?
It is a removable cover, usually made from tough waterproof fabric, that lies over the rear bench of your car. It catches hair, wet paws, dribble and the odd accident, and stops claws from scratching leather or snagging fabric seats. Most clip round the rear headrests and tuck into the gap between the seat cushion and backrest so they stay in place.
A protector keeps the car clean. It does not hold your dog in place, so you still need a harness and tether, a crate or a dog guard. More on that in the safety section.
The Three Main Types
| Type | What it covers | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench cover | Seat cushion and backrest | Cars that often carry passengers, calm dogs | Leaves the footwell open, so mud can reach the carpet |
| Hammock | Seat, backrest, footwell and the backs of the front seats | Muddy walks, dogs who try to climb forward | Blocks the footwell, so unclip the front straps for passengers |
| Hard base cover | Seat plus a firm panel across the footwell | Large dogs, long drives, dogs who like to lie flat | Takes up the rear footwell completely |
Some covers combine two or three of these in one, switching between bench, hammock and extender modes. They cost a little more but suit households where the back seat is used in different ways through the week.
Six Checks Before You Buy
Width
Measure your rear bench from door to door at the seat base. Pick a cover close to that size rather than the biggest one you can find.
Waterproof layer
A fully waterproof layer stops a wet dog soaking through to the seat. Water resistant fabric alone may not be enough after a swim.
Non slip backing
A grippy underside stops the cover sliding on corners and roundabouts, especially on leather seats.
Side flaps
Flaps that hang over the door cards catch the spray when your dog shakes off rain.
Seat belt openings
Openings let you reach the buckles, so you can clip a harness tether without lifting the cover.
Easy cleaning
Check whether the cover can be wiped, shaken out or machine washed, and follow the care label.
Match the Protector to Your Car
The size and layout of your back seat matter as much as the size of your dog. Here is a simple starting point, with links to our car specific ranges.
Small cars and hatchbacks
Narrower benches mean a well matched bench cover or hammock sits flatter. Side flaps help in a tight cabin.
Small SUVs
Rear legroom can be tight, so a hard base cover often gives a medium dog more room to lie down.
Family SUVs
Wide benches and deep footwells suit a full hammock, or a hard base cover for bigger dogs.

Our covers are universal rather than made for one car, which is why measuring first matters. Several of our hammocks are around 137cm wide, and one is listed at 125 to 145cm.
Match the Protector to Your Dog
- Small dogs: a bench cover protects against claws and hair. Add a raised small dog car seat if your dog likes to see out.
- Medium dogs: a hammock stops them slipping into the footwell and keeps paws off the backs of the front seats. See our Cocker Spaniel and Staffie ranges.
- Large dogs: a hard base cover or extender gives a flat, firm floor. Browse our Labrador and Golden Retriever ranges.
- Older dogs: a firm, level surface is easier on stiff joints than a soft sling. Lift them in rather than letting them jump.
How to Fit a Back Seat Protector
- Clean the seat first, so grit is not trapped under the cover and rubbed into the fabric or leather.
- Lay the cover over the bench with the waterproof side up and the non slip side down.
- Loop the rear straps round the rear headrests and pull them snug.
- Push the seat anchors firmly into the gap between the cushion and backrest.
- For a hammock, clip the front straps round the front headrests so the cover forms a sling over the footwell.
- Open the seat belt slots, clip your dog's tether to the buckle, and attach it to a padded car harness.
Give the cover a tug before each trip. If it moves easily, tighten the straps or push the anchors deeper.
Cleaning and Care
Shake out hair and grit after each trip, ideally outside. Wipe off mud with a damp cloth once it has dried, as wet mud tends to smear. For a deeper clean, follow the care label on your cover. Let it dry fully before refitting, because a damp cover can smell and slip more easily.

Safety and the Law
Highway Code Rule 57 says that when you are in a vehicle, you should make sure dogs are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. It lists a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard as ways to do this.
A protector is not a restraint. Pair it with a harness and short tether clipped to the seat belt buckle, never to a collar. Keep the tether short enough that your dog cannot reach the front seats. Our seat protectors are made to keep your car clean and comfortable, and are not crash tested.
Back Seat Protector Questions
What is the best back seat protector for dogs?
It depends on your car and dog. A hammock gives the most coverage, a bench cover suits cars that carry passengers, and a hard base cover is best for large dogs who like to lie down.
Will a universal cover fit my car?
Most universal covers fit standard rear benches. Measure your seat from door to door and choose a cover close to that width.
Can passengers sit on a dog seat cover?
Yes, on a bench cover. With a hammock, unclip the front straps first so the footwell is free.
Will a seat protector damage leather seats?
A cover with a non slip backing protects leather from claws. Clean the seat before fitting so trapped grit cannot rub the surface.
Do I still need a harness if I use a protector?
Yes. A protector keeps the seat clean but does not restrain your dog. Use a harness and tether, a crate or a dog guard.
