French Bulldogs are compact but broad, with a deep chest, short legs and a flat face that makes them feel the heat. That means a good French Bulldog car seat needs a wide, firm base, a low front edge they can step over and plenty of airflow. Shop seats rated for 12 to 25kg, travel beds for Frenchies who like to lie flat, and waterproof covers with mesh windows. Order online with delivery across the UK.

Weights from the breed overview: males about 9 to 14kg, females about 8 to 13kg.

Heat Comes First for Frenchies

UK research from a veterinary college's VetCompass programme, covering more than 900,000 dogs, found that French Bulldogs had about six times the risk of heatstroke compared with Labradors. A flat face makes panting less effective, so a warm car is a real danger.

  • Never leave your Frenchie in a parked car, even with the windows open.
  • Run the air conditioning before they get in on warm days.
  • Choose breathable seats and covers with mesh windows so air can move.
  • Travel early or late in summer, and carry water.

Picking a Seat That Fits a Frenchie's Shape

Width matters more than height

A Frenchie's shoulders and chest are wide for their weight. Look at the inside width as well as the weight limit, so your dog can turn and settle without being squeezed.

Choose a rating with headroom

Most adults suit a seat rated to around 14 to 20kg. Smaller females under 10kg may fit a 12kg seat, while big, heavy boned males can be more comfortable in a 25kg seat.

Bed or booster?

Many Frenchies sleep for most of the drive, so a flat travel bed or back seat extender suits them. A raised booster works for dogs who want to look out, as long as the sides are not so high they block airflow.

Harness, Never Collar

A tether clipped to a collar pulls on the throat, which is the last thing a flat faced dog with a narrow airway needs. Use a padded dog car harness that sits across the chest, and keep the tether short. Highway Code Rule 57 asks drivers to keep dogs suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or be hurt if you stop quickly. Our seats are for comfort and containment, not crash protection.

Waterproof Covers for Wrinkles and Drool

Frenchies have a short coat, but they shed fine hairs and many drool after a walk or a drink. A waterproof hammock protects the back seat and stops your dog slipping on leather. Pick one with a mesh window if your car has rear air vents, so cool air still reaches the back.

French Bulldog Car Seat Questions

What weight car seat does a French Bulldog need?

Most adult French Bulldogs weigh 8 to 14kg, so a seat rated to 14 to 20kg gives them room. Check the inside width too, as Frenchies are broad for their size.

Can a French Bulldog travel in the boot?

Yes, behind a dog guard or in a secured crate, but boots can get hot and stuffy. Make sure air reaches the boot and avoid long drives on hot days.

Is a booster or a car bed better for a Frenchie?

Both work. A car bed suits dogs who sleep in the car, while a booster suits dogs who settle when they can see out. Avoid deep, enclosed seats on warm days.

How can I keep my French Bulldog cool in the car?

Cool the car first, use breathable seats and mesh covers, keep trips short in hot weather, offer water at every stop and never leave them alone in the car.
