A car seat cover for dogs only works if it fits. Too narrow and mud reaches the seat edges. Too wide and the cover bunches up and slides about. This free fit calculator compares your back seat width with the real sizes of the covers we have in stock, then tells you which style suits your car, your dog and the people who ride with you.

How the Fit Calculator Works

Each cover we sell has a listed width. The calculator takes your seat width, from your measurement or a typical figure for your car, and looks for covers that sit within about 6cm narrower to 12cm wider. A little extra width is fine because it tucks into the gap between the cushion and backrest. It then picks a style based on who travels with your dog and what you said matters most, and shows live prices and stock.

How to Measure Your Back Seat

  1. Width. Run a tape measure across the seat cushion from one door to the other at the widest point. This is the number the calculator needs most.
  2. Depth. Measure from the front edge of the cushion back to where it meets the backrest. Hard base covers need enough depth to sit flat.
  3. Headrests. Check whether your rear headrests lift up or come out. Most covers clip around them, and some hard base designs need them.
  4. Seat belt buckles. Note where the buckles sit so you can line them up with the openings in the cover.

Typical Back Seat Widths by Car Type

Car type Typical seat width Cover width to look for
Small car or supermini 124 to 130cm 128 to 140cm
Small SUV 128 to 136cm 135 to 146cm
Family hatchback or saloon 130 to 138cm 135 to 147cm
Estate or family SUV 134 to 144cm 137 to 150cm
Large SUV or 7 seater 144 to 152cm 146cm or more

These are rough figures, as seat shapes vary between models. Your own tape measure always wins. If you drive one of our listed cars, see the covers picked for it, such as Nissan Qashqai or Volkswagen Golf.

Hammock, Bench or Hard Base: Which Style Fits Best?

Style Best for Keep in mind
Hammock Dogs riding alone. Clips to front and rear headrests and closes off the footwell. Blocks the seat for passengers until you unclip the front.
Bench cover Cars that carry people or a child seat. Lies flat over the cushion and backrest. Your dog can still step into the footwell.
Hard base Large dogs or two dogs. A firm platform bridges the footwell so paws do not slip. Bulkier, and some need headrests that lift up.
Boot liner Dogs that ride in the boot behind a dog guard. Measure the boot floor and add the bumper flap.

Common Fit Problems and Quick Fixes

The cover slides on leather seats

Push the seat anchors deep into the gap behind the cushion and pull the headrest straps tight. A non slip backing helps a lot here.

The edges of the seat show

The cover is too narrow for your bench. Choose a wider cover or one with side flaps that hang over the seat edge.

The cover bunches in the middle

It is a little too wide. Tuck the extra into the seat gap or tighten the side straps.

Seat belts are hard to reach

Line up the belt openings before you clip the straps, or pick a cover with zip or Velcro belt access.

Is a Cover Enough to Keep My Dog Safe?

No. A cover protects your seats, it does not hold your dog. Highway Code Rule 57 says dogs should be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or be hurt if you stop quickly. It lists a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard.

Pair your cover with a harness. Clip your dog to a car harness through the seat belt opening, never to a collar. Our covers and seats are for comfort and protection and are not crash tested.

Fit Questions

Are universal dog car seat covers really universal?

They fit most cars, but not all. Back seats range from about 124cm in a small car to over 150cm in a large SUV, so checking the width first saves a return.

Should the cover be wider than my seat?

A few centimetres wider is ideal, as the extra tucks into the seat gap. Much wider than 12cm and it starts to bunch.

Can I use a dog cover with a child seat in the back?

Yes, with a bench cover on the other side only. Fit the child seat straight onto the car seat as its maker says. See the child car seat rules.

What if my headrests do not come out?

Loop the straps around the top of the seat back instead and push the anchors into the seat gap. Avoid hard base covers that need lift up headrests.
