A good dog crate mat turns a bare plastic tray into a soft, dry place your dog actually wants to lie on. This collection brings together washable crate liners and a memory foam crate bed for puppies, adult dogs and older dogs with stiff joints. Measure the floor of your crate first, then pick a mat that fits it flat without bunching. Pads can be folded to fit, but a foam bed cannot, so check the size table below before you order.

Why Your Dog's Crate Needs a Proper Mat

01

Most crate trays are hard plastic or metal. A mat cushions elbows and hips, which matters more as dogs get older.

02

A non slip base stops bedding sliding to one end every time your dog turns round.

03

A waterproof layer protects the tray and your floor from puppy accidents, drool and spilt water.

04

A familiar, comfy surface helps the crate feel like a den rather than a cage.

A leading UK vet charity advises using soft, comfy bedding that covers most of the crate floor, with space left for bowls. The government's Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs also says every dog needs a comfortable, clean, dry, quiet and draught free place to rest.

Crate Mat Size Guide

Crates are sold by length in inches, but floor sizes vary between makers. Measure the inside of the tray, length and width, and choose a mat that is the same size or slightly smaller.

Crate size Typical floor (cm) Suits Mats in this collection
24 inch About 60 x 42 Toy breeds, young puppies Pad S folded slightly at the sides
30 inch About 76 x 45 Small dogs up to around 10kg Pad S (60 x 45) or the 60 x 45 memory foam bed
36 inch About 92 x 63 Medium dogs Pad M (70 x 50)
42 inch About 107 x 69 Larger medium dogs Pad L (100 x 70) if your floor is 70cm wide or more
48 inch About 121 x 74 Large breeds Pad L, or Pad XL (150 x 90) folded to fit

Floor sizes shown are from the 5 size folding crate we stock. Always check your own crate, as the same "36 inch" label can vary by several centimetres.

Washable Pad or Foam Crate Bed?

Washable crate liner

  • Thin, absorbent and waterproof
  • Folds to fit odd sized crates
  • Goes in the washing machine and tumble dryer on low
  • Best for puppies, toilet training, older dogs with leaks and travel crates

Memory foam crate bed

  • 7cm of supportive foam
  • Zip off washable cover
  • Fixed size, so it must fit the floor
  • Best for adult dogs, seniors and dogs who sleep in their crate overnight

Many owners use both: a washable liner on the tray as a waterproof layer, with the foam bed or a soft blanket on top. If a puppy has an accident, you only wash the liner.

Setting Up the Crate

  1. Place the crate well. Choose a quiet, draught free spot out of direct sunlight, where your dog can still see the family.
  2. Lay the liner flat. Grip side down, edges tucked so there are no loose flaps to pull at.
  3. Add comfort. Put the bed or a familiar blanket on top, leaving room near the door for a water bowl.
  4. Keep sessions short. The same vet charity advises not keeping a dog in a crate for longer than three hours at a time, and less while they are getting used to it.

Chewing and Safety

Puppies explore with their mouths, and swallowed fabric or foam can cause a blockage that needs surgery. A UK vet charity recorded 398 swallowed object cases in one year across its pet hospitals, including socks and thread. Supervise new bedding, swap to a thin liner if your dog starts ripping it, and remove any mat with torn seams or exposed foam. If you think your dog has eaten part of a mat, call your vet straight away.

Washing and Drying

Shake off hair and grit first. Machine wash pads on a gentle cycle without fabric softener, which can make them less absorbent, then tumble dry on low or air dry. For the foam bed, unzip the cover and wash it at 30°C, and spot clean the foam itself. Keeping two liners means one is always clean while the other dries.

Dog Crate Mat Questions

What size crate mat do I need?

Measure the inside floor of your crate, length and width, and pick a mat the same size or a little smaller. A mat that is too big will ruck up, which gives your dog a loose edge to chew.

Should I put a puppy pad in the crate?

Use a washable pad as a waterproof liner for accidents, with soft bedding on top. Most dogs avoid soiling where they sleep, so the crate should feel like a bed, not a toilet spot.

Can I use a crate mat in a travel crate in the car?

Yes. A thin non slip liner works well in a travel crate and stops your dog sliding on the tray. Make sure the crate itself is secured so it cannot move.

Is a memory foam bed good for an older dog?

Foam spreads your dog's weight more evenly than a thin blanket on a hard tray, which many older dogs find more comfortable. Speak to your vet if your dog has a joint condition.

Can crate mats go in the washing machine?

The washable pads can be machine washed and tumble dried on low. The memory foam bed has a removable cover that can be washed at 30°C, while the foam is spot cleaned.

What if my dog chews the crate bedding?

Remove it while you are not watching, use a thin liner instead of thick bedding, and give a safe chew toy. Check mats often for loose threads or torn seams.
