Cocker Spaniels are medium dogs with big energy, long feathered ears and a coat that picks up every bit of mud on a walk. The right Cocker Spaniel car seat gives them a firm, roomy spot with a short harness tether, and a waterproof cover keeps your car clean afterwards. Buy seats rated for 14 to 25kg, back seat covers and boot liners chosen for show and working Cockers, with delivery across the UK.
Show Cocker or Working Cocker?
Show type
Heavier feathering, longer ears and a silky coat. Most weigh around 13 to 15kg and stand 38 to 41cm under the UK breed standard. A raised booster or car bed rated to 18 or 20kg suits most.
Working type
Often a little taller and leaner, with shorter ears, a finer coat and lots of drive. Many ride in the boot after a day in the field, so a boot liner and dog guard, or a back seat extender, often works best.
Buy the Right Seat in Three Steps
Weigh your dog and pick a seat rated a few kilos above. For most Cockers that means 18kg or more.
Measure them lying down. Spaniels like to curl up, but a long show dog needs the inside length to stretch.
Add a harness. Clip the tether to a padded car harness, never the collar, and keep it short.
The After Walk Routine That Saves Your Seats
That feathered coat traps mud, grass seeds and burrs, and those long ears drag through puddles. In a large UK study of over 10,000 English Cocker Spaniels, a veterinary college's VetCompass team found that about 1 in 10 had outer ear inflammation each year, so keeping ears clean and dry matters.
- Towel the legs, chest and ears before your dog jumps in
- Check between the toes and under the ears for grass seeds
- Lay a waterproof hammock or boot liner down first, so mud wipes off
- Shake out the cover at home and wash it as the label says
Back Seat or Boot?
Both work, as long as your Cocker is restrained. Highway Code Rule 57 lists a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard as suitable ways to stop your dog distracting you or being hurt if you brake hard. A back seat set up with a booster and hammock suits family cars, while a boot liner behind a dog guard suits estates and shooting days. The products here are for comfort, containment and protecting your car, and are not crash tested.
Cocker Spaniel Car Seat Questions
What size car seat is best for a Cocker Spaniel?
Most adult Cockers weigh 13 to 15kg, so a medium seat rated to 18 or 20kg gives room to turn and settle. Check the inside length if your dog likes to stretch out.
My Cocker gets overexcited in the car. Will a seat help?
A set spot with a short tether stops them bouncing between seats. Start with short trips that end somewhere fun, and reward calm behaviour.
Do I need a cover as well as a seat?
For a Cocker it is worth it. The seat holds your dog in place, and a waterproof cover catches the mud and water their coat brings back from walks.
Can a Cocker Spaniel puppy use these seats?
Yes. Buy for the adult size and add a folded blanket while your puppy grows, so they feel snug and cannot climb out.
