A dog sling lets you carry a small dog or puppy close to your body with your hands free. It is handy on busy pavements, trains and shops, for puppies who are not fully vaccinated yet, and for older or recovering dogs who tire quickly. Check the weight limit, measure your dog's length and choose a sling with a short safety clip that attaches to a harness, so your dog cannot jump out.

Who a Dog Sling Is For

Puppies

A UK not for profit vet group suggests carrying puppies in your arms on walks before they are fully vaccinated, as the key socialisation window runs from 3 to 14 weeks. A sling makes that easier on your arms. Ask your vet which places are safe.

Long backed breeds

A UK vet charity lists Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, French Bulldogs and Pugs among breeds prone to slipped discs, and advises avoiding jumping and stairs. A sling can carry them over steps and kerbs.

Older and recovering dogs

Dogs with stiff joints, or recovering from an operation, can walk part of the way and ride the rest. Follow your vet's advice on how much movement is allowed.

Busy places

Crowds, escalators, station platforms and hot pavements are easier with a small dog held safely at your side.

Choosing a Sling Style

Style Best for Things to know
Pouch sling Toy breeds and puppies who like to curl up Dog sits deep in the pouch; look for a padded base
Open front sling Curious dogs who like to see out Head and front paws out, so a harness clip matters more
Zip or mesh top sling Nervous dogs and travel on public transport Mesh lets air in; check the zip cannot catch fur
Front pack carrier Longer walks and slightly heavier dogs Two shoulder straps spread the weight more evenly than one

Getting the Fit Right

Weight

Hold your dog on the bathroom scales and take away your own weight. Stay well below the sling's stated limit.

Length

Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Your dog should be able to sit with a straight back, not folded in half.

Your strap

Adjust it so your dog rests at hip or waist height and you can easily rest a hand on their back.

Always support your dog's bottom and back legs. A sling should cradle the whole body, not leave the back end hanging. For heavier dogs, a two strap front pack is kinder to your shoulders. UK veterinary clinical skills guidance advises that dogs over 15kg should be lifted by two people, so a sling is really a small dog tool.

Safety Checklist

  1. Clip to a harness, never a collar. A short internal tether stops your dog leaping out, and a harness spreads the pull if they try.
  2. Watch the heat. Pressed against your body, a dog warms up fast. A UK vet charity warns that flat faced breeds such as Pugs and Shih Tzus are at even higher risk of heatstroke. Stop if your dog pants heavily or seems restless.
  3. Bend your knees. When you lean down, keep one hand under your dog so they cannot slide out.
  4. Check the stitching. Look over straps, buckles and seams before every outing.
  5. Take breaks. Let your dog stretch, drink and have a sniff around when it is safe to do so.

Is a Dog Sling Safe in the Car?

No. A sling is made for carrying on foot. It is not a car restraint, and you should never drive or ride as a passenger with a dog in a sling on your lap. Highway Code Rule 57 asks for dogs to be suitably restrained in a vehicle, for example with a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard. For the drive, move your dog into a dog car seat carrier or a small dog car seat with a car harness.

Caring for Your Sling

Shake out hair and grit after each trip. Most fabric slings can be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle, but always follow the care label. Let it dry fully before your dog uses it again, as damp fabric can rub and smell.

Dog Sling Questions

What size dog can go in a sling?

Slings are made for small dogs and puppies. Check the stated weight limit and your dog's back length, and choose a two strap front pack for heavier dogs to spread the load.

Can I carry my puppy in a sling before vaccinations?

Many vets suggest carrying puppies out before they are fully vaccinated so they can see and hear the world during their socialisation period. Keep them off the ground in public places and ask your vet for advice.

Is a sling good for a dog with back problems?

A sling can help a dog avoid stairs and jumping, but it must support the whole spine. Ask your vet first if your dog has a slipped disc or is recovering from surgery.

Can my dog sleep in a sling?

Short naps while you are walking are fine, but do not leave your dog zipped in a sling unattended, and keep checking they are not too warm.

Can I use a dog sling in the car?

No. A sling is not a car restraint. Use a secured carrier, car seat or harness and tether, as Highway Code Rule 57 asks drivers to keep dogs suitably restrained.
